2010 04 03 Six Horses Quarantined- New Jersey
TRENTON
New Jersey animal health officials say they have placed six horse farms under quarantine as they investigate a possible outbreak of a deadly equine virus.
Five of the farms are in Monmouth County; the sixth is in Gloucester County.
The state Department of Agriculture said Thursday that it acted after two horses at Sweet Dreams Farm in Farmingdale were euthanized after showing signs consistent with equine herpes virus and another died with similar symptoms.
EHV is not harmful to humans or other animals but can spread quickly among horses and is often fatal.
The agriculture department said it is still testing to confirm the disease.
